Day 4
Hi Mom and
Dad, yesterday was the first day of our service work. We all met at 8:00 in the
morning except Julian and I who were 15 minutes late. We are helping the community
build a retaining wall so the school it does not get damaged by falling rocks
and mud. We did a lot of work on our first day; some of us were shaving cactus
for their slime, which is used as glue for the wall when added to the mud. Some
helped clear dirt so the wall can go further, three of us put the mud glue into
the cracks of the wall, and we all formed an assembly line with about 15 local
kids moving rocks for the wall. It was full of hard work but it was also fun.
We worked from 8:20 to around 12:00 when we all went home. At 3:00 one of our
instructors organized a game of soccer with many of the towns kids, where
Julian and Alex where easily the best on the court. Late in the afternoon we
had a local shaman give us this ceremony so that we would have a safe trip. He
was really philosophical and he taught me a lot about Peruvian religion and
beliefs. Hugs, James

Hello Everybody! This looks like quite a wonderful trip so far!
Ava you look really well working on that rock wall. I love the picture of you with the young girl. I have posted to my Facebook page to show everybody. I hope you had an enjoyable first night in Bandelsto. Dad told me there was a change in your housing. I hope all is good! We miss you and are getting ready for our trip to the Cape. We look forward to the pictures and blog posts be each of you. .
Hey there Peru Crew!
It sounds like you are off to a fantastic start! Cactus slime?!?! That has got to be a lot more fun than stuffing plastic bottles with garbage! I can't wait to hear all about your adventures - we will have to compare notes and pictures in September. Have a great rest of your trip - just remember to DRINK LOTS of WATER!
Miss Tucker
Hugs right back James! Meanwhile the Heat force game 7 and the Hockey is tied at 2 each.
Hi everyone,
Wow! The scenery is absolutely breathtaking! What a busy day you had! Many thanks to the kind soul who let Alexandra borrow the boots! That wall is amazing! What a great team effort.
Alexandra, I am glad that you are staying in good shape for soccer. :) We all miss you, even Flash! He got into some trouble today! ;)
I am looking forward to the next update. Enjoy!
Super pictures. Looks like people are remembering to drink frequently! How is it getting used to the rain? James, sounds like you get to stay active and busy. Melissa, are you all looking forward to your celebration of a fourth straight winter solstice? Enjoy it all! Love your blogs.
Hi,
Terrific pictures, but I don't see a chess board! I do see a lot of hard work and adorable little Peruvian children. Knowing our Wardlaw children and our teachers, I'm
sure the Peruvian children are being showered with lots of affection and
fun. I can sense some new pen pals and lifelong friendships being made. Great job by all-Mr.and Mrs.Kraynik
